Balancing Horse

History

It is thought that the balancing horse originated in Ancient Persia.

Balancing toys made in France in 1778 used mercury for the balancing movement. During the 18th century they could be found in inns as a horse race game in England.

Balancing toys became very popular in Victorian times and were regarded as ‘scientific novelty’ toys.  There were lots of different versions to be found, parrots, monkeys, boats etc…

Circuses and Punch & Judy shows were firm favourites  and the toymakers would base their toys on these forms of entertainment.
