Soldier Stick Educational Toy
A variety of human figures and animals on two sticks were made by the professional toy makers across Europe, particularly in Germany from the 18th century.
Many old pictures and engravings show them being sold at fairs and markets.
The soldier was popular from the early 1800’s whilst the monkey appeared in the 1890’s. He was so popular that there were dances and music hall songs created and books about ‘The adventures of the monkey up a stick’. At one point he was even used in a soap advert.
